I also shared some of Magness&#8217; views on <a href=\"https:\/\/coachingvb.com\/developing-tough-players-and-teams\/\">Developing tough players and teams<\/a> in a different post. Another way people think of mental toughness is in terms of being clutch. Magness wrote about that as well, making the argument that <a href=\"https:\/\/thegrowtheq.com\/being-clutch-isnt-magic-its-a-trainable-skill\/\">being clutch isn&#8217;t innate, but rather trainable<\/a>. He suggests there are five characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Appraisal of the situation as a challenge &#8211; This is as opposed to seeing it as a threat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A fixed goal &#8211; A clear focus on the desired outcome (not the process)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete and deliberate focus &#8211; Attention narrows to only what really matters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deciding\u00a0to increase effort and intensity &#8211; Flipping the switch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perceived control &#8211; If we feel we don&#8217;t have control, motivation fades<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about how we can work with our athletes on each of these items.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you think being &#8220;clutch&#8221; is just innate to certain athletes?
